I am not eating anything out of a smelly plastic bowl. NO! not me, only a nice clean little plate will do.

I personally wont eat any food that has migrated to the back of my plate. The trip across the plate is too much for me. I wont eat any food that has fallen on the floor either.

My human has a "trick" of pushing the food back to the front of the plate. I won't stand for this anymore.

How about you guys?

CVMA FIGHTS FOR THE RIGHT TO MUTILATE YOUR CAT

California Veterinary Medical Association is filing a lawsuit against the city of West Hollywood to challenge the law that prevents the declawing of cats in that city. There is a gathering to protest this CVMA lawsuit. Details follow...
CVMA FIGHTS FOR THE RIGHT TO MUTILATE

The CVMA has scheduled a press conference for tomorrow, March 6, 2005 at 10 am at Laurel Pet Hospital in West Hollywood (7970 Santa Monica Blvd., 323-654-7060, at Laurel Canyon and Santa Monica Blvds.) to announce their suit against West Hollywood's ban against declawing.

Why the California Veterinary Medical Association wants to spend its time challenging the will of the 37,000 citizens of West Hollywood when it could be working to end pet overpopulation or other serious issues is as puzzling as it is disturbing.

CVMA's British brethren, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, calls declawing "mutilation." Declawing is considered unethical by almost all the veterinarians in the rest of the world.

It would be a shame if protestors spoiled their nice press conference.

Rescued Baby Rats in SF

Hi Everyone,

I am foster mom for 17 gentle & tame baby rats. ALL are ready for adoption now. I have hand-raised them; they are tame, brave, and REALLY do not bite. They even like to cuddle and be petted. Various colors; creams, browns, plus several black, brown or cream hooded. They have had a check-up from the doctor and are healthy and sound. Ages range from 6 weeks to 4 months.

All of them get along (luckily, one positive outcome of their early confinement), and rats do make better pets as groups, so please consider adopting 2 or 3 together (boys or girls). I am in SF very near Animal Care & Control, which is where all of these siblings/cousins were dumped on Wednesday Dec. 15th.

You may have read about the surrender elsewhere. [On Dec. 15, 178 rats (yes 178) were dropped off at San Francisco Animal Care and Control.] Please adopt 1 or more of my little guys! I am available for adoption visits most days; $10-20 donation adoption fee, incl. neuter if needed, through SFACC. e-mail me to arrange for a visit. Photos available on request, although they are growing so fast i can't keep up! Better just to meet in person. e-mail me at amonk1@juno.com

ACTIVITY IN THE FOOD SECTOR

ANY activity in the food sector get your interest? It does mine. When my person goes out, I always get toona. Just s tiny bit though because I get it all the time, she wants me to still eat cat food so I can only have a little. Apparently toona doesn't have things cats need like taurine.
sheesh.

I like watching her cook and chop up vegetables. She makes raw things smell intersting by putting them on top of heat. I always want to snif, but when I get offered something, I won't eat it unless I see her take a bite (unless it's cat fuud). I like the smell of onions, but they make me sneez.

Keep on being picky!

I like chikkin, but only if I see mom eating a piece of it ferst. Shrimpies are ok, but again, she has to eat it in front of me or screw it I'm not going near it.

Toona, any kind, anywhere.

She called an animal communicator who I like because she told her to buy me lots of different kinds of foods. I like to eat the variety.

I now get to eat the variety every day.

Solid Gold Katzenflocken (mom likes to feed me this mostly because of the lamb, blueberry, flax etc. in it), Science diet light-hairball control, SCience diet natural, and for treat chase, I get different varieties of samples from the pet supply shop and vet.

I don't eat a ton, but I do like the variety. A little of everything. yes, indeedy. because I am the Spoiled Deserver.

Also, I get three bowls of water plus my own personal pretty glass. All for me. Me me and ME. Like it should be. That's how she thinks she tricks me into drinking more water, but I like to sip out of a variety of water containers too.

New cat and dog food

My mum was in this really good pet food store in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn yesterday where she found this new cat food called (she thinks) Abaya from Poughkeepsie. The dry stuff is covered in masses of copy that could be written by ZeHiter (or Candy). Basically, it includes next to no carbs, tells you that kibble isn't really a good idea for cats, mentions that the process to make kibble is not really one that leads to good feline health, and thus this includes lard and animal products. The guys there say it is really good and showed mum the frozen cat food they make.

Does anyone know anything about this product? Blue is hoping that he can continue eating Wellness, but we know Mum is looking for a new food to replace our low fat Iams kibble (shame on her--I love it, the carb fiend that I am).

New Wellness Flavors/I hate Tuna!

Hey friends,

My mum came home last night with some new varieties of cans of wellness. As you might know, I am obsessed with this food--I vomit on everything else and while that's fun, it doesn't always impress my mum or her friends for that matter. Humans.

Anyway, has anyone tried these out? Chicken and lobster and the shrimp and crab varieties sound very good, but I am a little concerned that they don't say human grade on them. Also, ZeHitler cat has warned us about the rice they added.

Anyway, happy eating. I'm off to sleep on top of the food cabinets.

Also, had tuna last night for the first time. It is horrible. I am fussy and can't believe the reputation that stuff has. I scratched by my bowl to show my disapproval. I haven't vomited it up though (yet). No wonder they're telling pregnant humans not to eat it.

Hi, I want to carry over a discussion that's going on in the "Chihuahua Unites Club" postings
(Gracie's parental Aaron posted it, thanks Aaron!)

Apparently Iams engages in some nasty unfriendly animal testing with their cat and dog food:
http://www.peta.org/feat/iams/

Thought you would like to know if you eat that stuff.

There's a lot of good threads in there, for example, a list of companies that DO NOT engage in animal testing:
http://www.peta.org/feat/iams/food.html

And if you are a finicky bastad (and I know you are) and little and a dog I recommend Natural Balance Food Rolls - (Natural Balance is on the kind list) cause they are some tasty shit and can be cut up for little mouths.

I love ANYTHING alcoholic! I go wild when I sniff the beer and once mom let me lap up some champagne (It was a special occasion) and it was SO divine! I was all MORE MORE MORE!!! But she said "No puppy, it's not good for you, only us humans can indulge in bad behavior." NOT FAIR! Those bubbles on my tongue made me run figure eights and donuts I tell you! Why is it us dawgs like the alcohol so much, does anyone know?

I love carbs but my teeth can't really cope with them. I mean, couscous is good as it is just the right size, but, try as I might, I can't steal a bite from my Mum's bagel (my paw can swipe it fair and square, but it's the biting that I can't cope with).

Any other carb lovers out there? Nothing beats Whole Foods French butter cookies crumbled up and served on a nice newspaper.

I hate guinea hen

I have found a new item to loathe: guinea hen. That Woman ran out of poussin over the weekend, which was our Ground Whole Prey du Fortnight. It's fairly delicious, but sometimes I need to be persuaded to eat it. So she went to the pet store that carries the ground whole prey, and found that the only meat they had in stock was turkey necks, chicken backs and necks, quail, guinea hen and rabbit. I'd already told her in no uncertain terms what I thought of the quail and rabbit, and the turkey and chicken contain too much calcium, so she thought, well, guinea hen is sort of like poussin, right? After all, they're both miniature poultry. And so she bought a 2-lb. package.

Oh man. How can I convey how heinous this stuff is? First of all, it looks, smells and tastes like CHICKEN. UGH. And it's really wet, even wetter than poussin. Double UGH. That Woman had to mix some canned salmon in it, but even that didn't get my appetite going like it normally does. She finally had to hand-feed most of it to me, which made me laugh inside because it makes her hands really disgusting and messy.

So I hate guinea hen with a passion, and That Woman told me that I have to tough it out for a week until the pet store gets some squab or poussin in stock.

Oh, the humanity!

Best commercial treat ever!

Right, so this is probably going to gross out the vegetarian or borderline vegetarian humans on this Tribe.... but the best damn treat ever is Moo Bits. They're little chunks of dehydrated cow lung. Yes. Cow lung. Nothing else. No filler. No preservatives. Holy motherfuck they're tasty. I could eat them all day long. Crunchy and tasty and packed with protein.

That Woman saw Baa Bits, which are pieces of dehydrated lamb lung, at the grocery store down the street. Can't hardly wait until the Moo Bits run out because as my friends know already, I'm cuckoo for anything lamb....

What are your favorite treats? I've had tiny dried shrimp, which are good but not great. Bonito flakes are awesome, but man they float away in the breeze so easily. Which makes them fun to chase, but then the whole floor is covered in tiny fish flakes, which drives That Woman nuts. (heh heh)

New batch of food!

So about once a month That Woman turns our kitchen into a regular abbatoir to make our chunks-o'-meaty-goodness breakfast. I'm posting this information here for those who might be remotely interested in what Eric and I eat. And goddammit, this IS my tribe so I'll spout whatever uninteresting crap I feel like, mwahaha....

But for those who don't want to wade through the whole tiresome post (and even for those who do), I'll ask this question first--what do you guys eat on a regular basis? Why do you love it/hate it? Or is it so instinctual that you can't really say?

Anyway, this is what That Woman got us. All meats are free range, antibiotic/hormone free and vegetarian fed unless otherwise noted.

1.5 lbs. "country" style pork ribs
6 lamb shanks totalling about 5.8 lbs.
1 turkey half-breast with bone and ribs, totalling about 1.5 lbs.
1 5-pack package of chicken thigh with skin, totalling about 1.5 lbs. (organic)
1 lb. lamb arm chops (conventionally raised--the other kind are out of That Woman's $2.99/lb. for cat food price cap)
1.5 lbs. lamb stew meat (conventionally raised--see above)
2 lbs. chicken gizzards (conventionally raised--but only because the fruity natural foods stores don't carry organic chicken organs except liver, dammit)
4 lbs. lamb hearts
1.5 lbs. lamb liver
2 lbs. lamb kidney

Lamb organs are courtesy of the farmer's market, awwww snap! Gotta love the "buying from a small, ethically-run family-owned farm" action.

She separates all meat from the bone, since lamb and turkey bones are much too hard for us to handle. The whole process took her about 3 hours, including cleanup. It'd be faster if she didn't have such wimpy arms and she could saw through the ligaments on the lamb shanks faster. This batch was especially large, and we have enough breakfast to last us over 6 weeks.

Our dinners are bought and prepared in a much more piecemeal manner since it varies. She gets 7 lbs. of chicken necks every 3 weeks, and ground whole prey according to availability (they typically come in 2-lb packagages, which works out to 8 days' worth of dinner for the both of us). We also get treats in the form of quality canned food (usually PetGuard or Wellness) mixed in with our chicken necks and canned salmon a couple three times a week.

I'm looking forward to snubbing this new batch of food like I always do, even though it's not substantially different from the previous batch. After a few days, though, I'm tricked into thinking it's actually good stuff and will eat it with relish. Or at least sometimes I will, when the planets are aligned correctly and the voices in my head tell me it's OK.

An easy, tasty treat!

That Woman came up with this tonight when we were both really hungry and needed a pre-dinner snack. It's good for our skin and coats and is full of B vitamins, protein and good fats (not all fats are created equal).

Are you ready for the super-complicated recipe???

1 large raw egg yolk
1/2 tablespoon melted butter
1/4 teaspoon nutritional yeast (optional)

Get your human to whisk all three ingredients together briskly with a fork and pour the shit into a dish. Then slurk it up. Make sure to groom your whiskers afterwards.

Some cats are intolerant of eggs, dairy and/or yeast. So if you're one of those--this recipe probably isn't that great an idea.

Considering the fact that i'm a glutton, I can be rather finicky. I like the really expensive food, but when my owner is on hard times he gets me the cheap crap. And when he pours it in my bowl, I just sit there and look at him like "i refuse to eat this smut", but then I wait till he goes in the other room, and reluctantly eat a little bit. I am also known to eat; peas, bread, ramen, and of coarse my own hair from the brush. But NOT puke, you guys are just gross!

I absolutely refused to touch the whole ground poussin That Woman tried to feed me last night. Sure, I was gladly eating it the day before, but the planets have since gone out of alignment, thus making it inauspicious for eating miniature poultry. She sounds like she's been hacking up massive hairballs all week, so I think she got tired of tussling with my Iron Will faster than she usually does. (When my palate is feeling exceptionally refined, That Woman sometimes smears the food on my paws and starts me eating that way, which is a dirty trick. But it requires tracking me down and getting me to be still long enough to be smeared, ha!) The bottom line is, she caved in and mixed in some canned salmon in with the poussin. Wow. That was good. I ate everything up and actually licked the plate clean, which is a rarity for me.

The power of canned salmon. Ahhhh.

Anybody else showed their human who was boss lately and got a great meal out of it? Or how 'bout just some good food you had recently?

Hello there. As the slave of some picky little kitties, I would like to know what foods you hate that do not even need to be cooked.

Sterling and Roxy can not 'abide' oranges. Sterling even gags when she smells them. Sabastian can not tollerate cinnamon or any spice like that. Against all odds, WS ,White Sox, does not like Salmon. ...not even raw. Rex is the only one who is not so picky.

What odd foods do you the kitties like?

Roxy will eat hot sauce and drink my wine if I am not looking. Sabastian loves green olives and oranges. ...but it may be just to piss Sterling off. ;) Sterling will kill for some icecream or american cheese, however, that it not so odd.

I also love pat`e and caviar! My brother doesn't like red meat and I only like lean red meat. As for wine, I've been tried it, but have been very curious and love to stick my face in the glass to smell it. I'm sure it would go great with the fancy blue cheese my mom loves!
